ICNA CSJ, USCMO, American Muslims Commend US Declaration of Rohingya Genocide

(WASHINGTON, DC – 3/21/2022) – The U.S. Council of Muslim Organizations (USCMO), the nation’s umbrella group for major national, regional, and local American Muslim organizations, commends President Biden’s administration for Sectary of State Antony Blinken’s formal declaration today condemning the Myanmar military for its 2017 ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya people with “a clear intent behind these mass atrocities – the intent to destroy Rohingya, in whole or in part.”

Guardian Report Reveals More CIA Torture

The Guardian has recently released a report on CIA torture. The CIA established an international torture program after 9/11, of which the horrors and extent of torture are still vastly unknown. 

Although there have been many testimonies on prisoners being sexually abused, waterboarded, experiencing “mock executions,” dying during interrogation, and suffering from hypothermia, sleep deprivation, pain, and humiliation, The Guardian reports that Ammar al-Baluchi suffered brain damage when he was slammed against a plywood wall by trainee interrogators that used him as a teaching tool.

 

Examining the Homicide Spike

Murder is on the rise in the United States. Since 2020, the rate of homicides has been increasing at an alarming pace. According to an article in The New York Times, “In 2020, murders in the United States spiked more than 27 percent — the largest percentage increase in at least six decades.” In 2021, the upward trajectory persisted: “Homicide counts in major American cities continued to climb in 2021, but the pace of the increase slowed,” reports the Council on Criminal Justice. Furthermore, mass shootings increased significantly. According to an article in Vox, they “were up more than 46 percent last year.” Why is this surge in murders happening?

 

ICNA CSJ NY Celebrates Women's World History Month

On Friday, March 11th, ICNA Council for Social Justice New York organized an event to celebrate Women's History Month. At the event women, speakers from different circles of life spoke on challenges do women stereotypically face, based on their gender, Which women’s cause needs to be challenged and changed first? How can men contribute more to women’s empowerment? (In the home & Society) How could you contribute your wisdom, expertise or ideas to empower other women? Describe a struggle or an obstacle that you overcame in your life? What are some of the skills you use to balance all the different roles you play as a woman?
