DeSantis Changes Florida Curriculum on the History of Slavery and Social Issues

Florida’s governor, Ron DeSantis, is dramatically altering Florida’s curriculum. DeSantis is fighting, in his words, “woke ideology.” The alterations in the curriculum are geared towards topics that acknowledge or teach about systemic injustice in American society. 

Taking control of the Education Department, DeSantis has vastly changed the K-12 curriculum. He has fought with College Board over AP African American studies, and Vox reports, he has hinted that he will get rid of AP courses altogether. 

 

France’s Islamophobia Problem

The mainstream French society’s issue with Islam is very apparent – from individualized attacks on Muslims in public to institutional policing, Muslims in France are discriminated against. 

The legacy of Islamophobia in France, and largely Europe, comes from centuries of orientalism, pseudo-science, and a perpetual lens of Muslims as an Other. From the Crusades to the Enlightenment era, Muslims have been viewed by Europeans in derogatory ways.
