Remembering 9/11

Remembering 9/11

September 11th, 2021
Washington, DC

On behalf of the ICNA Council for Social Justice, we send our thoughts and prayers to the families who lost their loved ones 20 years ago today. September 11th is a day that will command reverence and remembrance for years to come. As we approach 20 years, we stand hand in hand with our brothers and sisters and remember those we lost in those horrific attacks. Our family, friends, neighbors, and community members lost their lives to an unbridled act of violence, but their memories live on, inspiring courage, hope, and a breath of the American spirit of resilience.

Since September 11th, 2001, we have come together as a nation to understand the depravity of the attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon buildings. Though we have divided ourselves into groups and parties in an attempt to reconcile these tragedies with our understanding of humanity, we find ourselves aligned here, as we light candles for our nation's loss. We all have a story about where we were on that horrible morning, and about the people who are no longer with us. At ICNA CSJ, we grieve for our brother Tariq Amanullah, a member of ICNA NJ, among other smiling faces we remember in our mosques that were taken from us too soon. These people were and continue to be the foundation of our American Muslim community, and their loss was a stark reminder of what was at stake for our country.

In the coming days and weeks, we will come together to discuss the impact of September 11th on the American Muslim community, and on communities around the globe. It is important that we understand the impacts of a tragedy that transcended our borders, and pierced deep wounds among our own. We will leave you with the words of Reverend Nathan Baxter, who lead the country in prayer 3 days after the devastating attacks of 9/11- “ As we act, let us not become the evil that we deplore”

May God be with us, and grant us patience with our losses.
