Incarcerated Muslims Discriminated Against in Ramadan

Ramadan is a month of fasting for Muslims around the world. In an American context, many American Muslims have spoken about microaggressions, racism, and ignorance during the month of Ramadan. For many Muslims imprisoned, Ramadan, rather than a month of fasting and spirituality, becomes oppressive.

 

ICNA CSJ NY Celebrates Muslim History Month
On Friday, March 11th, ICNA CSJ NY organized an event to celebrate Women History Month. At the event women speakers from different circles of life spoke on challenges do women stereotypically face, based on their gender, Which women's cause needs to be challenged and changed first? How can men contribute more to women's empowerment? (In the home & Society) How could you contribute your wisdom, expertise or ideas to empower other women? Describe a struggle or an obstacle that you overcame in your life? What are some of the skills you use to balance all the different roles you play as a woman?


The speakers who spoke at the event were: Jannie Lynch (Poor People Campaign), Hana Farooqi (Young Muslims), Deysi Valle (Minority Business Woman), Ruhee Kapadia (Masjid Hamza), Candace Holley (Hempstead Caring Hearts), Renita Certain (Spin the Yard), Ayesha Ali (Consulate General of Pakistan), Maryam Khan (First Muslim Assemblywoman of CT), Dr. Naz Daniyal (ICNA Sisters), Prof Erika Deans (Community College of Nassau County), Nafiah Ikram (A brave and courageous woman), Jamillah Karim (Moderator), and  Shahid Farooqi (ICNA Nassau County President.)

Among the attendees, Tariq Rahman (President of ICNA New York), Saleem Siddiqui (Coordinator for ICNA CSJ New York) Carrie Solages (Legislator) special thanks to Br. Atif Rahman, Raza Rahman and Usman Ahmed who work tirelessly to make this event into a successful event.
