Ohio Train Derailment: Accountability

The state of Ohio is at the center of an environmental disaster. In East Palestine, Ohio, a train operated by Norfolk Southern derailed and released toxic chemicals. Thirty-eight train cars derailed and twelve others were caught in a fire. Five of the cars contained vinyl chloride, a gas used to make plastic.

Honoring New Muslim Representatives

February 11, 2023 – ICNA Council of Social Justice honored the first-time elected state representatives from the Muslim community – Abdelnaseer Rashid and Nabeela Syed – in a Community Banquet at Villa Park Illinois. Rashid is the first Palestinian-American to serve in the Illinois General Assembly. At 23, Nabeela is also among the youngest woman ever elected in Illinois. And the two legislators are the first Muslim American lawmakers ever elected to the Illinois State Legislature in the United States.

The United Maryland Muslim Council (UMMC) is pleased to announce the Muslim Lobby Day 2023 in collaboration with ICNA CSJ, CAIR and other Muslim Councils and partner organizations to be held virtually on Monday, February 27, 2023, at 6:00 pm. We have identified a list of legislative priorities in line with our mission to serve our community and to support issues promoting peace and justice and affect our communities at large. If there is a certain bill that you are interested in please let us know and we can include that in our list. We will share the details as soon as we finalize the list of bills in the Maryland General Assembly to support or oppose.

A large number of state delegates and senators have already responded and showed interest to participate. This is a testament to the work that you all have done in the past. Please keep it up and show your engagement by attending this important annual event and be heard.
