Recent news coming out of India is devastating for our Muslim brothers and sisters who live there.
Bloodshed and violence against the minority religious populations is not only ingrained into the society, but recent policies enacted have put India on USCIRF’s hot list. Discriminatory immigration policies have made India a dangerous place for non-hindus, as detention rates grow, and bloody clashes take place. Muslims living in India are stripped of their nationality, otherized, and face discrimination by police and citizens.
The National Register of Citizens (NRC) for Assam and Citizen Amendment Act (CAA) 2019, discriminatory policies piloted in the state of Assam, delegitimizes the citizenships of Muslims, rendering them stateless. The policy was an egregious display of xenophobia, Islamophobia, and the Hindu Supremacy Movement that has been taking place in India.
This disenfranchisement of Indian Nationals by India’s government is responsible for the violence that Muslims and Sikhs have been facing in the past several years.
The Hindutva Ideology stems from the BJP, Modi’s political party, and reflects fascist ideas that are a direct descendant of the RSS movement.
Businesses are being destroyed, families are being ripped apart, and people are being killed.
This week, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting the United States to meet with President Biden, Vice President Harris, and CEOs from corporations across the board. Though his visit may be to forge diplomatic relations between the two countries, we would like to make it known that USCIRF is asking the State Department to declare India a “Country of Particular Concern (CPC)” for violating religious freedoms.
As Modi tours the country, and as the state of India is discussed, join us in demanding that someone asks the difficult questions:
Why is India’s government growing increasingly nationalist with right wing policies that put Indian citizens in danger?
What can be done about India’s egregious religious freedoms violations, and how will India’s treatment of minorities affect its relationship with the United States?
Write to President Joe Biden as well as Secretary of State Antony Blinken and ask them to declare India a “Country of Particular Concern” for violating religious freedoms.
You can make sure that the voices of the silenced are heard through your demands to the most powerful people in the world.
