Assalamu Alaikum ICNA CSJ Supporter, For years, you have stood by ICNA Council for Social Justice as we’ve made it our mission to raise our voices for the people of India. As you know, India’s Fascist ruling party has wreaked havoc on the country's religious and ethnic minority populations. State-sponsored and state-approved violence against families has resulted in bloodshed and the demolition of homes and businesses. A recent hijab ban has made it difficult for young women to continue going to school. Muslims and ethnic minorities also risk being de-nationalized in some Indian states, leading to Indian-born citizens being rendered stateless. We’ve sent hundreds of emails, tweets, made phone calls, and met with congressional representatives asking them to take action and recognize India’s violent and racist state, led by the BJP and headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Now, Congress has finally taken action. Representatives Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaeb, Tim McGovern, and Juan Vargas have introduced H.R. 1196: Condemning human rights violations and violations of international religious freedom in India, including those targeting Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Dalits, Adivasis, and other religious and cultural minorities. This resolution asks that congress:
Condemns the human rights violations and violations of international religious freedoms in India.
Expresses concern about the worsening treatment of religious minorities in India
Declare India a country of ‘particular concern’ with regard to international religious freedoms. As we celebrate this small win for minority rights in India, we are looking forward to bigger accomplishments in the future. Remember that raising our voice against injustice is an act of goodness in the Islamic tradition.
